Shadow is a vehicle that appears in Twisted Metal 2, Twisted Metal: Black, Twisted Metal: Small Brawl, Twisted Metal: Head-On, and Twisted Metal (2012). It is always depicted as a hearse, and is usually driven by someone of dark, vengeful, and/or gothic origin. Its Special Weapon has remained similar throughout the games it has appeared in.

Shadow makes an appearance in the Twisted Metal TV series by Peacock.

Twisted Metal 2[]

Shadow debuts in Twisted Metal 2.

Special Weapon

  • Soul Shadow: A screaming Soul Shadow that glides along the ground at a haunting speed. Pressing the firing button once releases the Soul Shadow, and pressing the button again detonates it. Do not fire this weapon while using turbo or you may fall victim to your own hellish destruction.

Twisted Metal: Black[]

"Raven stole the hearse that delivered her friend from the funeral home to the cemetery. The Special Attack gained the hearse the name "Shadow"."
—Twisted Metal: Black - Instruction Manual

Shadow returns in Twisted Metal: Black.

Special Weapons

  • Shadow Burst: Firing the Special Attack launches an explosive "shadow" along the ground. It mysteriously travels towards its target as if controlled by dark occult powers. With the Special Attack fired, press the Fire Weapon Button [default: L2] a second time and it will detonate in a fiery blast.
  • Raven Gunner: Shadow's secret Special Attack is accessed by quickly pressing ↑ three times. Raven pops up and controls a 360 degree turret, much like Outlaw's Special Attack except it does more damage. However, it has a much shorter duration and you cannot use missiles either.
  • Stripped Gunner: An variation of Shadow's secret special attack. Activated by holding all Trigger Buttons and pressing Triangle three times Raven pops up in a stripped costume.

Twisted Metal: Small Brawl[]

"Think your sister's dolls are scary? You obviously haven't seen Shadow's "scary action figure"! Once fired, it moves along the ground towards your opponent. If you want maximum damage, score a direct hit. But if you're going to miss, press the Fire Weapon button [L2 button] to immediately detonate it. It won't cause as much damage, but it's better than nothing!"
—Twisted Metal: Small Brawl - Instruction Manual

Shadow's appearance in Twisted Metal: Small Brawl.

Special Weapon

  • Grim Reaper: He launches a Grim Reaper that can be detonated at will. It is slightly homing and doesn't do much damage.

Twisted Metal: Head-On[]

This time Shadow returns being driven by Mortimer Scharf, who has the wish to "go back to eternal rest". His age shows as "Long Dead".

Special Weapons

  • Soul Shadow: A violet projectile that explodes when triggered by pressing fire again. Its explosion can hit various enemies at the same time and can go through walls as well.
  • Mega Soul Shadow: After getting the special weapon upgrade, it gains the ability to be charged up. Charging it all the way will make the projectile way larger than normal, and also do more damage.

Twisted Metal: Lost[]

The Shadow used in Twisted Metal: Lost. It's the same vehicle from Black.

Special Weapon

  • Shadow Burst: Same as the one from Black.

Twisted Metal (2012)[]

Shadow returns in Twisted Metal (2012). This time, the vehicle features a black paint job with red flames. It is unlocked after beating Dollface’s fourth event.

Special Weapons

  • Death Coffin: Shadow's primary special works in the exact same fashion to the previous specials, press R2 (default) to fire and press it again to detonate an area-of-effect attack, the longer the casket travels, the more damage it will inflict. The "Coffin Bomb" can also be fired directly into enemies and will inflict maximum damage when a successful direct hit is landed.
  • Reticle Death Coffin: The secondary special works very similarly to the Remote Bomb, which can be dropped in the environment and cooked. Cook the bomb long enough to inflict major damage.

Twisted Metal (2023 series)[]

Shadow reappers in the Peacock series, looking similar to its Twisted Metal 2 and Twisted Metal: Black appearances. It was stolen from a group or individual known as "Reaper" by Quiet and her brother Loud. Although while they were being chased by Agent Stone and his men, the car is sent flying by some explosives triggered by Stone, and later confiscated.

It is later seen during the final battle, being driven by Carl and Jamie Roberts. It was finally destroyed after a homing missile intended for Twister collides with Shadow instead, killing its drivers.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • Shadow is one of the two recurring vehicles whose drivers get what they want in every game they appeared in, without being tricked by Calypso nor having any of the wishes backfire. The other is Crimson Fury.
  • Shadow's vehicle and special attack virtually stay the same in all the games it was in.
  • With the exception of Small Brawl, Mortimer is always accompanied by a raven, which is, incidentally, the name of the driver in Twisted Metal: Black.
  • In every game Shadow appears in, Shadow has always has a gothic appearance, most notably in Black.
    • However in Small Brawl, the driver is portrayed as a nerdy boy. Although in his profile screen, he appears very strange-looking, and is very asocial.
  • Shadow's hearse (Mostly from Twisted Metal 2) is currently the longest of all the cars in the series. However, several trucks and other vehicle types are larger (Most notably Juggernaut).
  • In every game, Shadow's motive has been revenge.
    • Although in Twisted Metal: Head-On, Calypso suggested revenge for the teens who woke Mortimer up, but Mortimer declined the offer.

Twisted Metal 2[]

  • Shadow's early name in Twisted Metal 2 was "Undertaker".[1]
  • Shadow makes a brief cameo in the Twisted Metal 2 comic.
  • Shadow's license plate (KREMAYTU) means "Cremate You", a reference to the driver's occupation as a mortician.

Twisted Metal: Black[]

  • There exists FMVs in Twisted Metal: Black's files which show an early version of the garage with the unlockable cars (the final game has them in the garage as well but the camera zooms in on each of them). In this garage, besides Yellow Jacket, Warthog and Manslaughter being there as usual, Shadow is also there taking Axel's spot. It's possible that in earlier versions of the game, Axel was a character that was available to play from the start, while Shadow needed to be unlocked.
  • Shadow and Axel are the only vehicles with secret specials in Black.
  • Shadow's alternate special has another secret version of it. With the special selected, hold down all four trigger buttons and press Triangle three times. The difference is only visual (not safe for work).

Twisted Metal: Small Brawl[]

  • According to Dave Goodrich, the art director for the game, Shadow's special was originally planned to be a coffin that shot out of the vehicle in an arc that would explode about ¾ths of the way of the arc or it could be detonated by the player. Upon exploding, the coffin would release remote-controlled bats that would swarm the targeted opponent and explode all over them in a manner similar to missile volleys seen in and made famous by the Super Dimension Fortress Macross franchise.

Twisted Metal (2012)[]

  • An early screenshot of Shadow from Twisted Metal (2012) shows its classic purple and black design. This can be repainted in the Paint Shop if the player so chooses.
