"Let's go, little Calypso man."
—Minion, Twisted Metal 2

Minion is a recurring contestant in the Twisted Metal series, excluding Small Brawl, Head-On and 2012. In all games, he serves as a boss and sometimes a secret playable character. He is usually a demon from Hell that operates a tank. Minion has consistently been the most powerful vehicle in every game he has appeared in, with the sole exception being Twisted Metal 4.

Twisted Metal (1995)

Minion is the winner of the previous Twisted Metal Contest. He is the final boss at Rooftop Combat and is not a playable character.

Much about the driver of Minion is unknown until the next game.

Special Weapon

  • All: Minion has access to all of the special weapons in the game.

Twisted Metal 2

Vehicle

Minion returns in Twisted Metal 2, it is the sub-boss at Amazonia. The following quote is seen when you defeat all enemies at Amazonia:

Last year's boss rises from the lava. "I must win! Calypso and I have a score to settle!" he yells, as he comes after you with a vengeance!

Minion is considered to be the best character in the game due to his high speed and armor. His special, in addition to being very powerful, quickly recharges, allowing it to be used more frequently than those of normal characters. He also has a unique characteristic in that he fires white, thick rays out of the back of his tank when the machine gun button is held down - these also deal damage. His only weakness is that he uses a large vehicle, making him a big target (somewhat compensated for by his speed) and can make him harder to maneuver in confined areas. When playing as him in story mode, you will skip the boss battle in Amazonia.

To unlock Minion on PlayStation, press L1, Up, Down, Left at the character select screen.

To unlock Minion on PC, type in "gloriousbigboy" on the character select screen.

Note: This ending is shared with all other boss vehicles of the game as well as custom vehicles.

Twisted Metal: Black

In this interpretation, Minion is a large armored tanker truck that had won the previous year's Twisted Metal contest. It is driven by Marcus Kane, Needles' split personality. Fortunately, Minion is playable, but not without having to beat the game with every other character first in order to unlock him. The playable version is scaled down to "normal size" so that he could use the repair stations. Surprisingly, he is even usable for online gameplay in Twisted Metal: Black Online.

Besides the large size of the boss version of his vehicle, Minion also has a shield that has to be shut down by destroying the four panels on the front, left, right and back sides of it. Minion is the sub-boss at Minion's Stadium, which is also an unlockable arena.

Special Weapon

  • Flaming Blaze: A powerful flamethrower at close range, but a series of homing Napalm blasts at long range. Possibly the most versatile and devastating special weapon in the entire game. Because it can set opponents on fire, it also has the effect of causing the targeted vehicle's turbo gauge to drain at a faster rate than normal. (Note: The homing Napalm is only usable with the playable version of Minion, as the boss version's Napalm is non-homing.)

Trivia

General

  • Minion's driver was not revealed until his playable appearance in Twisted Metal 2. No information on the driver was available in the first game.
  • Although it is known that Minion won the tournament the year before the events of the original game, it is unknown what he could have wished for, or why he didn't wish for his revenge on Calypso like he did in TM2 (though his ending there is non-canonical).

Twisted Metal (1995)

  • This game marks Minion's only appearance as a non-playable character and is one of few appearances to do so, the other being Darkside's Twisted Metal III appearance (without the use of a GameShark).
  • A GameShark code exists for TM(1995) that allows the player to change whoever they select to play as into Minion: 8018EFA4 0082 8018EFCC 0050
    • However, Minion can only be accessed whilst playing on the Rooftop Stage. The following code will ensure you will always start there: 8018ED04 0005. This has not been confirmed to work with the actual console and disk, but is confirmed to work via emulation.
  • In an early build of the game from August 17th 1995,[1] Minion's tank was known as "Mind Tank".[2]
    • This was a leftover from when the game was known during development as High Octane, and the vehicle itself was nicknamed in one of the unused Channel 7 cutscenes as the Mind Tank.

Twisted Metal 2

  • Minion's vehicle model and textures are recycled without any modifications from the first Twisted Metal.
  • Minion, like Sweet Tooth, cannot be selected as an AI opponent in Deathmatch mode; However, also like Sweet Tooth, it is still possible to play as Minion in that mode.
  • Minion makes an appearance in the Twisted Metal 2 comic.
  • In the PS4/PS5 re-release of the game, the trophy icon for beating the game with Warthog erroniously depicts Minion instead.

Twisted Metal III

  • This game has the last official appearance of Minion, the driver.
  • Minion's vehicle model has been slightly redesigned, featuring a new tank barrel and sporting a green color scheme while retaining the original body shape.
  • Unlike in Twisted Metal 2, this game allows to select Minion as an opponent in deathmatch mode.
  • The character art for Minion's driver in the December 1998 issue of the EGM Playstation Magazine was not of the usual demon, but of a human resembling Calypso instead. It is possible that Calypso was originally to be the driver of Minion in this game at some earlier point in development, however that is unconfirmed.[3]

Twisted Metal 4

  • There could have been a possibility of Minion having an info screen, as his TMIII info screen can be found in the game's files under the name "MINION.TIM[0]."
  • Unlike the first three games, Minion's vehicle has been completely redesigned, now resembling a more traditional tank as opposed to the original APC design.
  • As with the other bosses, Minion cannot be randomly spawned as an AI opponent in deathmatch mode; he, alongside the other level bosses can only be manually chosen as an AI opponent if the player themselves chooses to manually choose their own opponent.

Twisted Metal: Black

  • Minion is the only unlockable character besides Axel who does not require the player to destroy any kind of grounded control panel to unlock as a playable vehicle. However, considering that to unlock him, you need all of the characters, it could be said that, indirectly, you do have to destroy a grounded control panel at some point.
  • When playing the story mode as Minion in Black, it is possible to fight the boss version in Level 4 as it would normally happen. However, the size of the boss Minion is about twice the size of the playable version.
  • This incarnation of Minion is modeled after a civilian vehicle rather than a military type of vehicle, being made from a tanker truck. The reason for this is that the tanker truck came first, initially without any ties to Minion. The developers then wanted to add the character of Minion into the game and felt that the tanker truck would be the best fit for him in this setting.[4]
  • Minion does have machine guns, but they do not appear on the vehicle's in-game model.

Twisted Metal: Small Brawl

  • According to Twisted Metal: Small Brawl's art director, Dave Goodrich, Minion was originally planned to appear as the final boss, but this was scrapped very early on in the game's development due to it being intended for younger audiences. He was replaced by Piecemeal as the end boss instead. Minion was cut so early on in the game's development that no real plans were made for him, other than a quick sketch of the driver, who was supposed to be a child wearing a devil suit. His R/C car was never designed.
