Preacher returns in Twisted Metal (2012). However, he doesn't have his own storyline. He appears in Mr. Grimm's middle cutscene, and again after Dollface's ending. He is playable in every game mode other than Story Mode. His gang is called The Holy Men. There's no vehicle directly associated with him and his gang in-game, as he doesn't have a chapter in the story.
Story[]
In Mr. Grimm's middle cutscene, it shows that his objective is to "tear down your tower of sin", apparently in reference to the Calypso Industries HQ. During the cutscene after the credits, Preacher is seen being in an asylum that appears to be in another dimension (probably Hell, or is among other souls Calypso has trapped, implying that Calypso used his powers to capture Preacher as he posed a threat) inside Calypso Industries, screaming, "I know who you are!"
Behind the Scenes[]
During development, Preacher was meant to be a secret of sorts that players would decipher when playing through the different difficulties. According to David Jaffe, the story mode would always end with Dollface, but her fate and the ending that would lead into a possible sequel would be different for each difficulty, with one ending revolving around Preacher.
This ending would reveal that Dollface was actually a robot built and sent by Preacher to infiltrate Calypso's office and annihilate him. Calypso realises who sent the robot, and begins to talk to him, acknowledging some sort of past interaction between the two. Preacher is shown sitting in a make-shift hut, with a computor monitor, a keyboard, and posters on the wall claiming Calypso to be the devil. After Preacher talks about his belief in the lord and labeling Calypso as a demon, he causes the robot to self-destruct, destroying the office. Preacher leaves his hut after believing he took out Calypso, only to reveal that while the office was destroyed, Calypso had survived. Calypso then orders his babes (which were taken out in the final game) to go "fetch him." Preacher is then taken to Calypso's office, held by two of Calypso's babes, one holding a dagger. Preacher berates Calypso, claiming to know that what he sees is real, before Calypso transforms into a sort of demon-like form. The office then turns into a mountaintop that would feature other demons flying around it. According to annotations in the video by David Jaffe, this was how Preacher saw Calypso and his office all along. After a wide shot of Hell, it cuts to Calypso, intimidating Preacher by questioning whether what he sees is real or if he is insane. Shaken and in disbelief, Preacher denies his insanity, whilst Calypso continues to call Preacher's mindset into question, telling him that taking time away from his "mission" would get him right back up on his feet. As Calypso laughs in victory over Preacher, we have the ending that is featured in the final game, with Preacher being held in an asylum. However, there is an extra scene of Calypso paying a doctor to keep Preacher and to monitor him until his release. This would then transition to a backing shot that reveals that the asylum Preacher would've been in would be Blackfield Asylum, which would've been 11 years since it's first appearance in Twisted Metal: Black.
Trivia[]
- In Twisted Metal (2012), Preacher's live actor looks significantly younger compared to his in-game model. His model looks about 65-70, but the live-action actor appears to be in his early fifties.
- Despite being a priest, Preacher's gunner in Twisted Metal (2012) will still curse. This is most apparent when using the pick-up shotgun and getting in a point-blank shot.
- Preacher is the only character in Twisted Metal (2012) who does not have an official vehicle, considering that he is unplayable in the Story Mode, and Brimstone is not featured in the game.
