Project Copper[1] was the internal name of a cancelled title in the Twisted Metal franchise. It was set to be released for the PlayStation 5, and was claimed to be a live-service type game in the style of a battle royale.[1]

History[]

On September 29th 2021, various sources claimed that the development of a new Twisted Metal was handed to Lucid Games, responsible for the Destruction All-Stars released in 2021, another vehicular combat game. It was originally intended to be released with the Twisted Metal TV series that launched in 2023.[2]

However, on January 10th 2022, it was reported that the new Twisted Metal game was no longer in development by Lucid Games, with Sony wanting to give it to another studio.[3]

On the 12th of the same month, sources claimed that the new studio chosen to take over the title was Firesprite, a studio that is located 15 minutes away from Lucid in Liverpool, UK. Matt Southern, director of various Motorstorm games, also quit his position on Lucid Games for the same role on Firesprite, but it is unknown if he was going to work on the new Twisted Metal title.[4]

On February 27th 2024, Bloomberg reported that due to Sony's plans to lay off 900 employees worldwide, the unannounced Twisted Metal entry was ultimately cancelled. The game was planned to be 'live-service'.[5]

More information on the game came to light on February 28th 2025, which came in the form of blurry images and the idea of the game being a battle royale. There was also information given that the game was known internally as Project Copper, and that it was being made with Unreal Engine 5. The images also showed that the players were able to exit their vehicles and shoot each other in third person.[1]
